Martin Short, at 73, candidly confessed that he had some initial doubts about working alongside Selena Gomez on “Only Murders in the Building.” However, his skepticism was quickly put to rest as they embarked on this thrilling journey together.
In an exclusive interview during Gomez’s inaugural Rare Impact Fund Benefit, Short shared his thoughts on Gomez’s professionalism and charm. Contrary to his apprehensions, she turned out to be a delight to work with.
Initial Doubts Dispelled
Short revealed, “The first day we shot, I had never met Selena. Because of COVID, we’d only Zoomed.” During his drive to the set, he couldn’t help but wonder about the kind of costar she might be. “I wonder what Selena’s could be like? I mean, she could be a nightmare. She could be a pop princess nightmare,” he admitted.
But his reservations were quickly put to rest. “Right away — from the first second we started in the makeup room — it was, like, fabulous,” he exclaimed. Gomez’s punctuality, line memorization, talent, and professionalism left a lasting impression on Short.
A True Professional
According to Short, Gomez’s work ethic is impeccable. She is consistently on time and always well-prepared. “So good, so talented, such a pro — it’s fabulous,” he praised.
A Successful Partnership
Short, who portrays Oliver Putnam in the Hulu series alongside Gomez and Steve Martin, has now collaborated with the multi-talented artist for three seasons. Excitingly, the show has recently been renewed for a fourth season, promising more engaging mysteries and moments.
Advocating for Mental Health
At the Rare Impact Fund Benefit, Short emphasized the importance of celebrities like Gomez using their fame to make a positive impact. He believes that individuals with significant influence should take up causes close to their hearts, as Gomez has done with her efforts to support young people’s mental health.
Gomez’s Perspective
Gomez herself spoke with Media during the benefit, sharing her thoughts on the Rare Impact Fund’s role in her legacy. She admitted that asking people for money was a unique experience for her. Still, she acknowledged the importance of the cause and her privilege in having a platform to make a difference.
“It’s like a weird concept, but I know that we’re doing a good thing, and I couldn’t be more lucky to have the platform to do that,” Gomez reflected.
Embracing the 30s
Gomez also discussed her newfound perspective on life as she enters her 30s. She shared that she no longer feels the pressure to achieve certain milestones, which has allowed her to focus on things that truly matter without being held back by unnecessary worries.
Hopes for Season 4
“Only Murders in the Building” has seen the inclusion of prominent names such as Meryl Streep, Jesse Williams, Ashley Park, and Paul Rudd in its third season. Showrunner John Hoffman expressed his desire to have both Williams and Streep return for more action in season 4. He also humorously mentioned, “I mean, for God’s sakes, I would bring Paul back if we can. Listen, I would bring everyone back, and that might happen. Victims, killers, they’re all able to play in the landscape within this sort of certain narrative ways we can tell our stories.”
